My name is Mrs. Shumate and I am very excited to get to know each and every one of you this school year. I love science and I hope you learn to love it as much as I do. I have taught Earth Science, Biology, and Oceanography at Ocean Lakes High School, where I coached field hockey for 5 years, and currently teach Biology and AP Biology at Cox High School. I am currently a SCA co-sponsor, with Mrs. Bellissimo, and enjoy seeing students succeed in and out of the classroom.
When I am not at school, I am enjoying my time at home with my husband, Ben. We enjoy the outdoors and walking on the beach together. I have a daughter named Cecilia and three sons named Jackson, Luca, and a pitbull/mastiff named Bella. I am a native of Virginia Beach and attended Virginia Tech where in five years I earned a B.S. in Biology (pre med program), B.S. in Geology, and a Master's in Science Curriculum and Instruction. While at VT, I played field hockey and learned the importance of being a well rounded individual. I encourage my students to be involved in and out of the classroom. I hope to inspire students to make a difference in the world. I hope to help students find the positive in all situations and teach the importance of helping others and giving back when they can.
